Artist Residency at Last Ship, India

2025, Sound Archive and Composition

Heinrich Lenz & Marius Mertens (Dawn Device)
 

From March to April of 2025, Dawn Device (Heinrich Lenz & Marius Mertens) stayed at Khajuraho, India for an artistic residency. During their stay, the long-time duo documented the natural and man-made soundscape of rural India, collecting field recordings and creating compositions based on those recordings.

Taking advantage of the deconstructing capabilities of recent AI-tools, the compositions use the soundscape as a malleable basis for musical processes, isolating its layers and applying compositional processes to them. The result of this work are a number of sketches found above.

 

In a future residency, these sketches are meant to be developed into a full live performance based on the sounding material gathered during our stay in India
